Empire Dance Centre is managed by principal, Laura Powell.
We focus on encouraging our students, both young and old, to enjoy dancing and to see it as a joyful way to keep fit and express yourself through music.
Our aims are:
- to build confidence in our students, especially those who have never danced before
- to provide classes which are affordable to our demographic, to ensure we are as inclusive as possible
- to deliver high quality dance tuition, helping students progress from beginner level through to advanced
- to teach dance in a way which is enjoyable and fun, and promotes a strong sense of teamwork
Our styles of dance
Freestyle disco – this dance style is incredibly unique. A combination of high energy dance with some gymnastic movement which draws inspiration from current trends. Fast-paced and requiring a high degree of stamina, our beginner classes in freestyle introduce students to the basic moves, working up into more complex routines as their confidence increases.
Street dance – a style which is very well promoted in the public eye. From movies like Step Up and Street Dance 3D, to TV talent shows like Got to Dance and Britain’s Got Talent, street dance is everywhere. A very commercial dance style, which can be seen in many music videos, beginner street requires plenty of attitude!

As the principal at Empire Dance Centre, I personally teach every class. I have been performing since I was eight years old and over the past 20 years I have competed around the country in freestyle disco, street dance and rock ‘n’ roll, performed numerous times at the Birmingham NIA and taken examinations to the highest standard.
I have always been passionate about dancing and the positive effects it can have on an child’s confidence and self esteem, not to mention fitness levels, concentration and co-ordination. I hope to instill this passion in the children (and adults) I teach.
Hello i am looking for a street dance for my 8 year old daughter and we were wondering if u may have classes on Wed, Fri or Sat. Thank u. Regards Nadya
Hi Nadya, classes currently only run on a Tuesday for beginners, as per our timetable online. Hope that helps!
Hi i am a 16 year old guy who’s done street dance in the past, but lost interest when i was doing my exams i was wondering what classes would be best suited as i’m wanting to be more competitive in it
Hi Fraser, the best class for your age range would be our adult street fitness class but it is for a variety of ages/abilities so for fun only. I don’t currently offer competitive street dance alone. Hope that helps, Laura
Can I bring my 11 year old to the Tuesday 6.15 class to see what he thinks please?
Hi Caroline,
Yes that’s fine, we should be open next Tuesday (closed this week due to inaccessible venue) but I’m 38 weeks pregnant so if I go into labour early, class will close! Currently classes are still running 10th and 17th May. May I suggest you like our Facebook page where I’ll be keeping everyone updated? It can be found on our contact page. Many thanks, Laura
